If instead of reaching your dreams, you reach for excuses, it’s time to try turning excuses into confidence builders. Everyone has something that they fear and only by overcoming those can you achieve your true dreams.
You may be making excuses and not even realize it. Pay attention to the things you say over the course of a day or when someone asks you about your goals. Do you say things like, “I don’t have time,” or, “I’m not good enough.” If you say these things you’ll never have time and you’ll never feel good enough to reach for your dreams.
You’ll need to take a few days to catch yourself saying these things. Another way to find out what excuses you’ve been using is to talk to your friends. Chances are, if you’re willing to hear it, they can tell you the excuses that you’ve used over and over again.
It can be painful to hear your excuses reflected back to you. Before you ask your friends, make sure you’re ready and willing to hear what they have to say. And while it may be difficult to take in, knowing your excuses can help you to turn them around.
For example, if your excuse is, “I don’t have time,” you can turn it around into a positive statement such as, “I’ll make time.” By saying that over and over, you’ll be more likely to actually carve out the minutes or hours you need to get it done.
Instead of worrying that you’re not good enough, you can say, “I’m going to practice my craft to be my best.” You’ll feel more motivated to work hard and practice until you are accomplished in your field.
Excuses focus on what you can’t do. When that’s where you put your focus, your attitude and actions will reflect it. Once you recognize your excuses you can work to reshape them into confidence builders.
What you tell yourself is what you’ll become. You have a constant soundtrack playing in your mind that determines your attitude. When it’s full of negative thoughts and excuses, you’ll have trouble reaching your goals – or even developing goals and dreams.
When you transform negative thoughts – especially excuses – into positive thoughts and action plans, you’ll be more likely to live up to your potential. If you’re full of excuses, chances are you’re also stuck in a rut.
It’s time to take those excuses and trade them for positive statements. It may help you to write them down and post them around the room until you’re able to think of them naturally. When you work on turning excuses into confidence builders, you’ll become action-oriented and find that your dreams become a reality.
